Plot [ edit ]

The serial follows Sousuke Sagara, a fellow member of a covert anti-terrorist private military organization known as Mithril, tasked with protecting Kaname Chidori, a spirited Japanese high schoolhouse daughter. He moves to Japan to report at Chidori's school, Jindai Loftier Schoolhouse, with aid from his comrades Kurz Weber and Melissa Mao. Having never experienced social interactions, Sousuke is seen every bit a military maniac by his schoolmates as he interprets everyday situations from a combat perspective. He comes to relate with Chidori who realizes that Sousuke is protecting her, but he does not reveal the reasons due to orders also equally the fact that he does non know why Chidori is beingness targeted by dissimilar organizations.

Development [ edit ]

When starting the serial, Shoji Gatoh commented that as the series' theme was "Boy Meets Daughter." Gatoh worked in the order to keep that equally the focus regardless of the several other conflicts the story presented. [eight] Gatoh and Shiki Douji had a close relationship in the making of the novels. Gatoh gave Douji freedom in the design of the characters such as Sagara and Leonardo who were given multiple traits. On the other hand, Gatoh as well gave Douji references for "gentlemen" featured in the story. [ix]

In the making of the series Gatoh did not detect difficulties in creating a balance betwixt sci-fi and realistic elements since multiple Japanese series like Tetsujin 28 and Mazinger Z already provide the demographic a mixture betwixt those elements. Originally, Douji felt that the characters were also realistic. Believing the teenage demographic would not like them, the author changed them so that were seen as cooler characters. While the duo did not take difficulties with the novels' serious storylines, they still had issues with comedy [ane]

Chidori and Sousuke's human relationship was based on Japanese one-act due to how the two collaborate. In club to create a more interesting dynamic between the two leads, Gatoh wanted to modify the ways Sagara and Chidori collaborate as he was tired of female person characters requiring to be protected in the making for the light novels. As a result, Chidori instead supports Sagara multiple times. [ix]

Reception [ edit ]

The second DVD book of Full Metal Panic! The 2nd Raid was given a favorable review by Theron Martin of Anime News Network for pushing the graphic symbol developments of Sousuke and Kaname as well every bit dramatic elements beyond comedy and activity. Describing the bear on of the book, Martin explains that "[t]he full impact of that [Sousuke and Kaname's relationship] comes out beautifully in episode 7, when Kaname seeks out Sousuke in a moment of fear and, for the first time, Sousuke isn't there for her. It's one of those telling moments that tin can ascertain an entire series." [55]

THEM Anime Reviews has noted that the Arm Slaves, like most real life vehicles, are done so meticulously that fans of mecha series would "scour online catalogues for tech books and sketches." [56] Agency 42 says that the "mecha[Arm Slave] activeness in the show is very well done. While I tin can't compare the activity with other more than grounded mecha shows like Patlabor, the combat is very well done and easy to follow, and visually interesting." [57] Triforce commented that Arm Slave battles in the Full Metal Panic! series would be able to continue viewer's attention to the show. [58]

Negative criticism has surfaced on the part of the Arm Slaves throughout the Total Metal Panic! series. For instance, Ender'southward review states that their mecha roles are confusing that the Arm Slaves are both "08th MS Team soldiers and Dragon Ball Z-blazon fighters, hurling energy balls at each other and going "Super Saiya-jin." [59] Anime Database rated the Full Metal Panic! serial 4 out of v considering of the Arm Slaves battles since they kickoff out from existence good to being very unrealistic. [lx] GameSpot Marriage comments on the relationship between the Arm Slaves and the animation washed on Full Metallic Panic!, saying both animation and camera views were bad. [61]

The novels have over eleven million copies in impress. [62]
